Coffee Fellows, Malta | Best Place For Vegan Breakfast In Sliema

Since travelling to Malta I’ve become obsessed with the place, but there’s one thing that I found difficult there, which is finding vegan-friendly food. It’s especially hard to find vegan breakfast in Sliema – I only came across one great place for it. That place is Coffee Fellows, a German chain that fits well into the Maltese city vibe whilst offering excellent options for all.

The Vibe

Like with many cafés on the island, Coffee Fellows is super chill. It has lots of indoor seating, with modern and aesthetically pleasing décor. There are also loads of places to sit outside if you want some sun, and in the winter they have heaters nearby. Smoking is permitted outside and there’s usually sport available to watch, or an excellent playlist to chill to if that’s more your vibe.

The staff are all super friendly and I felt really welcomed. One of them even helped me plan my travel routes for my Gozo trek! They were easy to talk to (and all speak English), and were happy to offer advice on food options as well. There is a collection point inside where you can get your food once ready, which worked well, however staff will also bring food out to you if it is quiet.

The Food

I actually ended up visiting Coffee Fellows three times during my short stay in Sliema (it was that good!). The first time I visited was purely for coffee, not realising that they had so many vegan options. I decided to try their vegan lemon muffin alongside my oat cappuccino and this was my downfall… The muffin was so wonderful that I ended up buying two more over the next couple of days!

Such a smooth cappuccino, and the lemon muffin just made it

I then went back for breakfast the next day to try out their smoothie bowls. I do love a smoothie bowl whilst on holiday, and these certainly didn’t disappoint. Coffee Fellows offer three separate smoothie bowls which are all vegan – tropical mix, berry mix, and dragon fruit. I’ve already had a few dragon fruit bowls before, so went for the tropical mix on the first day and the berry mix on the second day. Both were gorgeous, with a good ration of smoothie to crunchy parts. They were also so pretty! I think the berry mix was my favourite overall, although it’s close, and I’d easily order both of them again.

Aside from breakfast options, there are also some tasty-looking vegan wraps and bagels for lunch, which I was unfortunately unable to try. For those who aren’t vegan or plant-based, there are plenty of other things on the menu as well.

The Extras

Coffee Fellows offers takeaway as well as eating in and, given its brilliant location just set back from the coastline, this is certainly worth doing. It’s easy to grab a coffee and find a spot on the promenade, less than a minute’s walk away. Here you can enjoy stunning ocean views whilst sipping your beverage of choice… A lovely way to take in Malta.

Final Thoughts

I was really impressed with Coffee Fellows – vegan breakfast in Sliema in hard to come by so they are leading the way here. Despite being a chain it felt independent, and the hospitable and chill vibe made me feel at home. I’m planning to go back to Malta and Coffee Fellows will likely be my first destination… I recommend anyone looking for great vegan food go and check it out!

  1. I’ve never had a smoothie bowl before, not have I even heard of a smoothie bowl. But it has peaked my interest, even though I’m not really a healthy eater or a fruit eater. I would like to give one of these a try at least once. It doesn’t surprise me that people in Malta speak English well. The country even got a George Cross medal from the British monarchy
